With a minimal investment of time and focus, you have a fit and youthful shape in your older adult life.  You probably have more time available to concentrate on yourself now that your family and job doesn’t take up all of your time. Keeping athletic, maybe babysitting your grandchildren, even fitting into your tight jeans are reasonable goals.

You can be assured that you’ll feel comfortable and supported by your teacher and the other students in our Senior Exercise program. You’re at the pivotal age where you can create a blueprint for your elderly years. Age is only a perception, defined in part by the degree of health and well-being you feel. Keep focused on your most important issues as you decide to embark on a fitness program. All our exercises are safe to do in our Senior Exercise program. Being older doesn’t mean you’ve given up the idea of looking good – it’s just as important now, as it ever was.

  • You want to wake up without stiffness and aches; you want to walk steps in the subway or the theater; you want to walk a mile while keeping your stamina and your balance.
  • You do not want to fall.  Aside from looking down when you walk, it’s necessary to keep your leg muscles strong and your body balance to avoid falling.

Routine’s the thing for senior’s stamina and well-being.  Visualize a class at Stay in Shape’s Senior Exercise Classes; dressed in tights and leotards or tee shirts, women take their places on floor mats to begin their workout.  Next to each is a pair of weight and a dyna-band. The soft strains of background music fill the air as they get down, roll onto their sides and begin an hour of stretching and strengthening.

This is like our other NYC exercise classes, except everyone in this class is over 65.  A few of the women, who began these classes more than 20 years ago when they were middle age working women, look forward to their weekly senior exercise classes with unbridled enthusiasm.

You can pay for only the classes you attend Senior Exercise Program, as long as you tell us your schedule beforehand.  We keep our classes small with a maximum of 7 students.  Each student receives attention and is able to learn how to modify an exercise for them.
Marjorie Jaffe's Back In Shape Studio has a convenient location and is easy to access. The studio welcomes students of all ages and all fitness levels and we have personal trainers and instructors that specialize in all sorts of fitness. We even have programs that were created with senior citizens in mind. Our senior fitness classes are for the 50+ age group, which has a number of special exercise needs. It's particularly important that you maintain an active lifestyle as your age increases. Age makes your body undergo several major chances.

Many of our fitness plans consist of a combination of exercise, stretching and diet, including classes offered at the studio. Our goal is for everyone to have a healthy, lean body with a properly aligned spine. This will lead to you having more energy and seniors report dramatically increased vitality and quality of life.

  • Flexibility: Stretching improves how you look and feel and good flexibility is vital at every age. If you are flexible you are less likely to experience injuries. For seniors it is especially important to be able to move and bend without aches and pain. Our classes focused on flexibility promote healthy joints and achieving your full range of motion. A class begins with a warm-up to get the blood flowing and then we move into the stretching routines. You'll learn a lot in the classes including some techniques you can use any time and anywhere to loosen yourself up. Morning stretches are a great way to get your body ready for the day ahead.
  • Core Training: Having a strong core is something else that is important for anyone at any age. Strong core muscles keep your body stable. They support the rest of your body, especially your back. Your core also contributes to your good posture and helps you with balance. Posture and balance are two aspects of fitness that many seniors worry about. We include some core training in all of our fitness classes and we also offer specific core training classes too. Your core is used when you exercise pretty much every other muscle in your body and a good core is one of the best ways to avoid back pain.
  •  Overall Senior Fitness: Our senior fitness classes at the Back In Shape studio were created to hone in on all of the important aspects of fitness that are more specific to seniors. It's never too late to begin exercising. You want to have strong leg muscles for getting up and down more easily and you need to maintain your arm strength for lifting around the home, opening windows and even for opening jars. Exercise helps to strengthen your bones and you will even learn exercises that relieve the back pain associated with getting older.
